Art deco as artistic style:
Bevis Hillier organised an exhibition in Paris in 1966 „The Year 25’ Art deco/ Bauhaus/ Stijl/ Esprit Nouveau”. Then he describes „art deco” as a determinant artistic tendency in his book published two years later with the title Art deco of the 20th and 30th. In facty, it only became obvious in the sixtees, that there existed an artistic tendency from the middle of 1910’s to the end of thirties, with the 1925’s Applied Art Exhibition Paris as its most important event. The most respected interior decorator was Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann (1879-1933), who earned a big success on that exhibition with furnishing the Big Drawing Room, which was exhibited in the pavilion of the House of Collector.

Biedermeier style
The biedermeier was the first real comfortable style with an intimate atmosphere, which had faithfully reflected the economic-cultural situation of the citizens after the turn of the century (1815-1848). In some ways it is similar to the empire style but without its luxury. This style mainly appeared in home and furniture art, which is caracterized by a strict rationality. Modest, but nice, comfortable and uniform furniture was manufactured.

Empire style
In the second half of 18th century the empire style was the peak and the end of classicism for the home and furniture art. It officially lasted from 1799 to 1815, but its impressions lived on for more decades in aristocratic palaces.
Characteristic, that antique Roman forms are used directly. It was named after the amperor Napoleon I., who wished to have similar scenery to the Roman Empire to praise his highness.
